Where should I look for ruby engagement rings in New York?

Q:My girlfriend isn’t interested in a diamond engagement ring. Which is great, except that I’m completely clueless as to what to even look for in a non-diamond engagement ring. I have a decent sense of what she likes, but can just any nice ring be an engagement ring? And can anyone recommend a good jeweler for this sort of thing?

A:Are you kidding? New York City has one of the greatest Diamond Districts in the world! Other than that you can try consignment stores or antique shops. Often you can find something truly lovely for a really decent price, and if it’s older it usually has better rubies.

Q:Being a dumb guy on these matters, I would estimate the size to be roughly 3/16th inch. There are diamond flakes surrounding the center stone. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

A:go ask a jeweller – a great ruby actually costs more than a great diamond because very good quality rubies are rarer than very good quality diamonds.for a fantastic ruby,you need to be looking for blood red – most rubies sold for general jewellery purposes are more pink
